Chocolate Raspberry Cake

12 ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Shortening
  • 2 cups Sugar
  • 2 cups Flour
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 3/4 cups Buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cups Water
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 4 ounces Chocolate (unsweetened)
  • 3/4 quarts Raspberries

6 steps

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
  2. Grease and flour baking pan (13"x9"x2" or 9" or three 8" round layer pans).
  3. Mix all ingredients (except for raspberries) in mixer for 1/2 minute at low speed, then beat for 3 minutes at high, scrape occasionally.
  4. Pour evenly into pans while interspersing layers of raspberries. It's smart to keep the edges & top free of raspberries so it doesn't crumble (using just one pan makes this easier).
  5. Bake as follows: 40-45 mins if using one pan, 30-35 minutes if using three pans.
  6. Frost with Chocolate Butterspice Frosting
